I’m proud to represent Hutt South. I’ve been the MP for Hutt South since 1993 and have lived in Wainuiomata for the majority of my life.

My Parliamentary career began in 1984 when I became the MP for Hamilton West – a position I held until 1990.

I attended Victoria University where I completed a BCA before attending Wellington Teacher’s College. I taught in Wellington and Taumarunui, and set up the King Country Rural Education Programme before becoming involved with politics.

When Labour came to government in 1999, I was given the roles of Minister of Education, Minister of State Services, Minister Responsible for the Education Review Office and Co-ordinating Minister Race Relations – posts I held until 2005 – as well as Minister for Sport and Recreation and Associate Minister of Finance.

I’ve also been Minister for the Environment, Minister of Labour, Minister of Broadcasting, Minister for State Owned Enterprises, Minister of Energy, Minister of Economic Development, Minister for the Rugby World Cup and Minister for the America’s Cup during Labour’s time in government.

The Hutt is a great community – it is strong artistically and culturally, and is home to many leading sports teams.

There are a number of unique issues facing the Hutt Valley:

I’m a strong supporter of keeping Industrial Research Ltd in the Hutt – it provides jobs and economic benefits for the Hutt economy, and is at the forefront of smart manufacturing.

Exide Technologies

I’m opposed to Exide staying in the electorate – there have been too many accidents, too many leaks and its technology is a long way away from the world’s best practice.

Cross Valley Link

This needs to be the next roading priority in the Hutt Valley.

Use of rail into Seaview

We need to look at re-opening the rail lines into Seaview so that containers can be transported more easily, and heavy trucks can be taken off The Esplanade.

One of my main priorities in Wainuiomata is further Early Childhood Education and working with providers and the DHB to get a decent rest home opened in Wainuiomata.

Outside Parliament, I’m a keen road biker and have obtained a bike license. I also enjoy reading and watching sport.
